Without Congressional action, a number of programs, including unemployment benefits, the COBRA health care subsidy, and small business loan guarantees, would expire this weekend. The bill that Congressman Cohen supported this afternoon extends the life of these programs for an additional 30 days through March 28 -- unemployment benefits are extended through April 5.

This afternoon, the House of Representatives passed The Health Insurance Industry Fair Competition Act, which will take away the anti-trust exemption for health insurance companies, requiring them to compete fairly and adhere to the same anti-trust laws as other companies.

“Mr. Speaker. Recently, Forbes Magazine ranked what they call the most miserable cities in the country. Memphis, Tennessee, was third on that list. They considered certain issues but they didn’t consider others.

“They didn't consider the best barbecue in the United States of America or some of the greatest music that comes from Beale Street, a great tourist center, or the gorgeous sunsets on the Mississippi River.

“I strongly supported passing the Credit CARD Act, also known as the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights, because consumers need relief from the abusive billing practices of the credit card industry,” Congressman Cohen said. “The changes that go into effect on Monday will hold credit card companies more accountable, while providing tough new protections for consumers.”

The federal funding will be used to construct two new intermodal facilities, including one in the Memphis area. The grant will fund improvement to existing pad and support tracks, build new trailer and container parking areas, lead tracks and related ancillary buildings and features.
