Memphis, TN – Upon learning of the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Congressman Steve Cohen called on the President to nominate James Comey, former Deputy Attorney General under the current administration, to lead the Department of Justice.

“Mr. Comey has been one of the heroes of the Department of Justice throughout the Congressional investigations,” said Congressman Cohen. “He is respected, well-qualified and would make large advances toward restoring faith in America’s justice system.”

Washington, DC -- Today Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced that the Department of Justice is awarding The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) in the amount of $1,184,287 to Memphis and Shelby County governments.

Washington, DC -- Today Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) announced the Department of Health and Human Services grant award in the amount of $353,153 for the LeBonheur Community Outreach Ryan White Care Act Title IV Adolescent Initiative.

Congressman Cohen stated, “I’m very pleased that LeBonheur has received this grant to continue its important work. LeBonheur is a credit to our community and provides hope for so many who otherwise would have none.”

Washington, DC – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will speak at a ceremony renaming the Clifford Davis Federal Building as the Clifford Davis and Odell Horton Federal Building at 10 a.m. Friday, August 24. The ceremony will take place on the south side of the building located at 167 N. Main.

Washington, DC – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) has appointed former Tri-State Defender publisher and editor Marzie G. Thomas to his staff at the Memphis district office. As a special assistant to Congressman Cohen, her responsibilities will include veterans affairs and community outreach, including working with the religious community on areas of common interest such as civil rights, health initiatives and poverty issues.

Washington, DC -- Today a U.S. Congressional Delegation in Israel, including Congressman John Tanner (TN-08) and Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), met with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Likud Party Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Defense Ehud Barak.

The Delegation also met with the parents of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, Israeli army reservists abducted near the Lebanese border last year by Hezbelloh.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) is encouraging the participation of District 9 minority vendors in the Minority Procurement Seminar being held in Washington, D.C. on September 27. In an effort to increase the level of participation by minority vendors in contracting opportunities with the U.S. House of Representatives, the Committee on House Administration is sponsoring a Minority Procurement Seminar on September 27, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Speaker, I think it has well been addressed here the dangers that this side of the aisle and possibly some well-meaning folks on the other side of the aisle have about the encroachment on the Constitution that this bill will have. What it basically does is take judges out of the process.

Mr. Speaker, I am astonished at what I have heard from the other side of the aisle: disingenuous talk about great deficit; the deficit caused by the Republican majority's work or lack of work over the last 12 years; giving tax breaks to the rich while sending our troops to a war that has cost us half a trillion dollars and approaching a trillion dollars.
