WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement after learning of the passing of Memphis Police Officer Geoffrey Redd:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today spoke from the House floor and then voted against a Republican-sponsored resolution to terminate the requirement established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for proof of COVID-19 vaccination for foreign travelers to the United States. The vote on passage of the resolution was 227 to 201.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) will attend this evening’s State of the Union address by President Biden as the nation continues to register major progress in employment, rising wages, investments in infrastructure, ending the COVID-19 pandemic, slowing inflation, and addressing domestic and international threats to democracy. WASHINGTON – CongressmanSteve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure and Judiciary Committees, has reintroduced the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Second Screening Act.

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today re-introduced the Safer Streets Act, which would create a new grant program to support local communities with high rates of violent crime, including the hiring of additional law enforcement officers and providing resources to community-based violence prevention programs.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the City of Memphis will receive two grants totaling $2,771,378 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Program. One grant of $1,680,469 is for operations and safety. The other, of $1,090,909, is for vehicle acquisition.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, today announced U.S. Department of Homeland Security Port Security Grants to the City of Memphis ($398,250), the Memphis and Shelby County Port Commission ($638,769) and Shelby County Government ($238,078), totaling $1,273,095.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, voted late Wednesday night to advance an assault weapons ban to the full House of Representatives. During debate on the measure, Congressman Cohen engaged his Republican colleagues in debate, arguing their defense of such weapons involves the anticipation of a civil war. In his remarks, he referred to Committee members Greg Steube or Florida and Chip Roy of Texas.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that the University of Memphis will receive a $299,582 grant from the National Science Foundation for cybersecurity research under the direction of Computer Science Professor Christos Papadopoulos.
