“I am very pleased that the Memphis Housing Authority will receive nearly $150,000 from HUD,” said Congressman Cohen. “The Memphis Housing Authority has a very difficult job, and it is my hope that these grants will assist the under-funded housing operations in Memphis.”

In the spirit of Christmas, Congressman Cohen encouraged President Bush to sign children's health insurance, higher education assistance and environmental protection legislation that the House of Representatives has passed over the last year.

“As Elvis would say, it’s going to be a ‘blue, blue Christmas without you,’” said Congressman Cohen during the taping. “We wish you were home.”

“Our fighting men and women have been serving bravely in Iraq and Afghanistan for far too long, and I know they wish they could be with their families this holiday season,” added Congressman Cohen. “I hope these messages let them know that we’re thinking about them and fighting for them here in Washington. Next year, hopefully I’ll get to wish them Happy Holidays in person.”

“With home values dropping, a mortgage crisis looming, and the costs of health care, home heating oil, and a college education continuing to rise, Americans – especially middle and lower-income families – are beginning to feel the effects of a declining economy,” explained Congressman Cohen.

“Fifty years ago, the Little Rock Nine made history when they boldly took it upon themselves to integrate an all-white southern high school,” said Congressman Cohen. “In tribute to their courage, the Congress passed a law creating a silver dollar honoring them and the fiftieth anniversary of the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School. I’m presenting the Whitehaven Senior Class with this commemorative coin because I never want their legacy to be forgotten in this area.”

“I am very pleased that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis will receive nearly a $200,000 from the Department of Health and Human Services,” said Congressman Cohen. “This is a new award and a testament to the fine research being done in Memphis at the UT Health Science Center. I’m proud that UT continues to make Memphis one of the top metropolitan centers for bioresearch in America.”

The grant will fund clinical research related to neurological disorders
