Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) commended the Memphis Public Library and Information Center on the Floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, January 15th for receiving the National Award, the highest national honor bestowed upon a library by the Institute for Museum and Library Services. First Lady Laura Bush had presented the award to library representatives earlier that day at the White House.

“I’m very happy to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and I appreciate every opportunity to cast a vote on behalf of the citizens of the 9th District,” said Congressman Cohen.

The 2007 Session was the busiest in the history of the House of Representatives in terms of numbers of votes. Democratic Party leaders pledged during the 2006 campaign to make Representatives work harder and longer hours during the 110th Congress.

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) thanks the people of the Ninth District of Tennessee for giving him the opportunity to represent them in the House of Representatives. In the face of unprecedented obstructionist tactics by the Bush administration and Congressional Republicans, the 110th Congress has made significant progress in the areas of energy, healthcare, the environment and ethics reform.

“We do have to have certain techniques to ferret out information and protect our people, but at the same time we have to respect our laws,” said Congressman Cohen during his cross-examination of one of the panel-members.

The purpose of the hearing, as Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (MI-14) explained, was to determine the “who, how, when, where, and why of the destruction of the videotapes; and most importantly, what might have been shown on them.”
