WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen TN-9), a past Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, today spoke at a hearing of the renamed subcommittee on “gender-affirming” health care. He raised questions about the direction the subcommittee is taking in raising culture war issues and defended the civil rights of transgender people.
In his remarks, Congressman Cohen said in part:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Ranking Member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission, questioned expert witnesses at a hearing titled “Rescuing Ukrainian Children and Women from Russia’s Aggression.” Congressman Cohen focused his line of questioning on the Ukrainian children abducted to Russia and efforts by Papal Envoy Matteo Zuppi to have them reunited with their parents.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today cosponsored the Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act with Congressmen Frank Pallone (NJ-6), Bobby Scott (VA-3) and Richie Neal (MA-1) and will also cosponsor the Affordable Insulin Now Act introduced by Congresswoman Angie Craig (MN-2).

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today questioned Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about the threats that domestic violent extremism, anti-government sentiment, and white supremacy pose to our homeland security. He followed up on his exchange with FBI Director Wray last week in which they discussed how rhetorical attacks on federal law enforcement are spurring violence.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) will receive a grant of $511,066 from the National Eye Institute to study retinal angiogenesis.

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today wrote to Governor Bill Lee asking him to seek a disaster declaration for damage done to homes, businesses and utilities by the third round of serious storms to hit the region since June 25. The request involves severe thunderstorms beginning July 18 that affected parts of Shelby County.
The letter reads in part:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), the Ranking Member of the Aviation Subcommittee, today announced that Memphis International Airport will receive $1,337,110 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program to make improvements to the Terminal Building.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide the State of Tennessee $12,160,651 for costs incurred by the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division after the severe winter storm of February 3-4 last year. This public assistance is authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
