Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) speaks about potential for the 111th Congress to effect change at home and abroad. Under the Obama Administration, Congress has the opportunity to restore America's standing in the world, solve the problems with our broken economy and help save our environment. Congressman Cohen also encourages school districts to allow all children the opportunity to view President-elect Obama's swearing-in on January 20.

On April 22nd 2008, we commemorated the 35th anniversary of the signing of the landmark Equal Pay Act by President John F. Kennedy; however, we still have not achieved the goal of women’s equality in the workplace. Since my days in the Tennessee Senate, I have fought passionately to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work. I strongly believe that these two pieces of legislation will help us make significant progress on that front.

“We’re in the midst of the most serious economic downturn in nearly a century, and it is unacceptable for our elected leaders to receive a raise while the rest of the country sees their savings slip away and their home values plummet,” said Congressman Cohen. “It’s time to step up and do the right thing.”

The National Center for Research Resources gave a new award in the amount of $457,024 to Dr. Charles R. Handorf, Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UT. This is a Biomedical Research Support Shared Instrumentation Grant that will be used to purchase a whole slide imaging system for the UT-HSC.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded a new grant in the amount of $330,309 to Dr. Anjaparavanda P. Naren, an Associate Professor in the UT Department of Physiology, for diabetes, endocrinology and metabolic research.

Over the holiday season, I had the pleasure of participating with MIFA, Toys for Tots and the Mountain Top All Souls Outreach Ministries. These venerable organizations helped thousands of people in the 9th District enjoy a happier and healthier holiday season, and I thank them for everything that they do for the community.
