Floor Statements

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) speaks on the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 4, about the tragic shootings that occurred over the weekend in Memphis, TN. Four adults and two children were shot or stabbed in the Binghamton community. Congressman Cohen advocates signing the COPS bill into law in order to provide more funding to local law enforcement officers across the country to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

The grant will allow Dr. Wei Li, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, to continue to study the efficacy of new cell-killing agents (beyond traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy) in the treatment of advanced cases of melanoma, the cause of the majority of skin cancer related deaths.

“It’s vitally important that children learn to read and that they have access to books and educational materials,” said Congressman Cohen. “Reading is the basic building block of all education, no matter what curriculum a student pursues. In visiting these schools it is my hope to inspire students and to reinforce the message that education is vital to their future success. Whenever I spend time with students, I’m re-energized in my fight to make certain that every child has the educational access needed to learn and succeed.”

This bill is good for our environment, good for our economy and good for our national security,” said Congressman Cohen. “Ending our dependence on foreign oil and using renewable energy to help fight global warming will make our nation stronger. And at a time when our economy is struggling, these investments will help create hundreds of thousands of new jobs. ”

The grant will allow Dr. Peter J. McKinnon, an Associate Member of the Department of Genetics/Tumor Cell Biology, to continue his study of ataxia telangiectasia (AT), a lethal genetic disease that attacks children. AT causes progressive loss of motor skills and predisposes children to cancer and immune system problems.

“On February 7, 2008, Congress passed sweeping legislation to boost our sagging economy, including over $100 billion in tax rebate checks for American workers, as well as disabled veterans and their widows, and seniors living on Social Security,” said Congressman Cohen.

“I have gathered new information from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the House Ways and Means Committee into an extensive set of Frequently Asked Questions about the stimulus payments to ensure that everyone in the 9th District knows what to expect and can plan accordingly.”
