“The Southern Heritage Classic is an excellent showcase for the City of Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen. “While the timing of the broadcast is not ideal for Memphians, our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan will have the opportunity to watch a broadcast of the game on Sunday morning.”
“I am very pleased that Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center was chosen for a Ryan White grant,” said Congressman Cohen. “The funds from this grant will help the hospital deliver critical services to their patients living with HIV and AIDS,” added Congressman Cohen. “Unfortunately, the HIV epidemic continues to afflict the 9th District, particularly in the African American community. I applaud HHS for recognizing the necessity for increased funding to combat this deadly disease.”
The University of Memphis will support the Operation Safe Community: Integrated Gang and Violent Crime Reduction Project, a crime abatement initiative in Shelby County developed in partnership with government, law enforcement, private sector and community leaders.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases gave a new award in the amount of $167,319 to Dr. Mostafa Waleed Gaber, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging at the UT-HSC, for allergy, immunology and transplantation research. Dr. Gaber is researching new treatments for wound healing.
